During her workshop Metztli will teach how to prepare a traditional Mexican Atole (a warm cornmeal drink). She will start the session with diving into the ancient traditions of Mexico that were followed to support the recovery of new mothers after birth.

Metztli Lopez Torres is a Mexican sobadora, doula, childbirth and certified lactation educator, anthropologist, feminist, mom, sister, daughter, friend, advocate of women’s rights and environmentalist. 

She gained her first knowledge and experience with the rural women of Mexico (mujeres del campo) that shared their knowledge about pregnancy, labor, breastfeeding, and newborn care. She learned to use traditional medicine like herbs, massages and food to heal herself and her baby. Because of that, she found her true vocation, to provide services during all stages of women’s life based on relationship with their female body. That was the way that Luna Mamá was born in the rain forest of Veracruz in 2012.

During the Summit Metztli Lopez Torres will be hosting a session on the 23rd of September, at 1 PM (EST):

MEXICAN ATOLE

Ingredients: Equipment:
5 cups of water(pitted) 1 spoon
1 cinnamon stick 1 medium pot
1 small panela (or 1/3 of cup of sweetener of choice like jaggery/gur, sugar, allulose, monk fruit) 1 shiver or strainer
1/2 cup of Corn Masa Flour or Amaranth Flour measuring cup
50 to 100gms of pure chocolate 1 16oz jar
